Historical Site, Archaeological Site

The Caves of Sterkfontein are naturally formed of limestone and are of great interest to archaeologists; preshistoric remains of Australopithecus and Homo sapiens have been found here. It is renowned as a World Heritage Site. The early excavations date back to the 1930s which yielded the discovery of the skull and other remains of an Australopithecus member. The World War II caused a long interruption in the work of the findings, resumed when the remains of a Plesianthropus were discovered. In the late 90s, the foot bones of an Australopithecus were discovered, which led on to the large subsequent excavations of about 500 early human remains, scientifically known as the hominids, cementing the Cave’s reputation as one of the richest archeological sites in the world
