The rail line between Mettupalaiyam to the Nilgiri Hills was completed and opened for traffic in June 1899. The line was extended to Ooty from Coonoor in 1908. The Nilgiri Passenger train covers a distance of approximately 45 kms., travels through around 15 tunnels, and crosses aplenty bridges. It has one of the steepest tracks in Asia with a maximum gradient of 8.33%. The railway is predominantly picturesque because of the surrounding rocky terrain, tea plantations, and forested hills.

Nestled in the Nilgiris, situated near the Mukurthi National Park and around 20 kms from Ooty town, the Pykara Lake is a breathtaking site to behold. The drive to the lake is also a beautiful one. The Paykara waterfalls are nearby and one needs to hike up for around a kilometre to reach the falls. Head out to the lake for some relaxing time with your family. Go boating or picnicking and don’t forget to hog on the pakoras and boiled peanuts available at various stalls around the lake.

Garden, Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden was laid out in 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale and is spread over 22 hectares. An extensive collection of flowering trees, beautiful shrubs, colourful lilies, well maintained lawns, an Italian style garden, a fern house and vibrant orchids are some of the highlights of the garden. In the centre of the garden is a fossilised tree trunk which is estimated to be around 20 million years old! The Botanical Gardens are maintained by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu

Lake, Picnic Spot, Nature

Situated around 25 kms from Ooty, Avalanche is a mesmerizing valley full of rolling meadows, gentle streams and magnolia flowers everywhere. Named after a landslide that happened in 1823, the valley reminds you of a picture right out of a fairytale book! This lake is also one among the major source water supply for the Kundah Hydro Power stations. Trout fishing is allowed in the avalanche lake. One can go on hikes, treks, picnics, and fishing trips to this valley

Located around 50 kilometres from Ooty, the Upper Bhavani Lake is one of Ooty’s fine secrets. The blue waters that zigzag calmly through the green mountains, offers one of the best views of the forested areas.

If you are visiting in the early hours, the mist and the fog all make for a romantic location and if you love photography, the frames captured here will leave you speechless!

The place is perfect for a quiet picnic as you soak in the nature and the tranquillity. When here, do take out time to visit the nearby Bhavani Temple and The Sholas (the Cauliflower valley).

Located near the city centre, the Government Rose garden is spread across 10 acres of stunning landscape covered with roses of all colours. The garden is home to over 3600 varieties of roses including Hybrid Tea Roses, miniature rose, Floribunda and Ramblers.

The captivating Black and Green roses here, are something to behold!

Highlights include the ‘Nila Maadam’ located on a spot from where you can see the whole expanse of the gorgeous garden. A walk here taking-in the fragrance of the roses is simply mesmerizing and adds to the experience.

Located 20 kilometres from the city centre, the Shooting Point is where many Films have been shot and still continue to do so. The picturesque view of the mighty Nilgiris is best seen from this spot and combined with the beautiful meadow- makes for one of the best picnic places around Ooty.

The early hours are magical- when the fog embraces the entre meadow while the sunny afternoons are loved for its sheer burst of green all around!

The Ooty Lake is one of the major tourist attractions in Ooty. Spread across a relatively huge area, the lake is surrounded by thick forests on 3 sides. Activities like boating are carried out at the lake. It also has a nice little picnic spot on its bank and boasts of a Deer park as well. A good place to visit with the family. For the curious, the lake was artificially formed between 1823- 1825 by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, by damming the mountain streams flowing down the Ooty valley.

The pathway that leads to the view point is just as mesmerising.

The highlight however, is seeing the sunset. Pack a small picnic to spend some quality time in the lap of nature, to make the most out of your visit.

Located around 25 kilometres from Ooty, the Sanctuary is named after the Avalanche that took place here in the year 1823. The beautiful place is loved for its signature Shola trees, beautiful flowers (including Orchids and Rhododendrons) and the trekking pathway that stretches along the Bhawani River.

The lake water offers boating and fishing activities for visitors. You can rent fishing gear near the lake to fish for trout while the Jeep Safari is perfect for an adventurous family day-out.

Home to the Needle Industries Pvt. India Ltd. that manufactures the Pony Needles, Ketti Valley is located 12 kilometres from Ooty.

The beauty of the whole valley is in its simplicity- beautiful field lands, lush-green trees all around and a raw appeal that is slowly merging with urbanisation. The whole valley is a pleasure to walk around while you breath the pristine air and see the small buildings merge with the greenery.

The place is ideal for a day trip when in Ooty and if you love walking, the pathways make for the perfect routes to explore
